A special weekend of wild food, herbalism, nature connection with Wicklow Wild Foods and John Slattery, author, forager and herbalist. This weekend event will be held on the doorstep of some of Co. Wicklow's most beautiful oak forests, at Avondale Retreat, Rathdrum.
This is a weekend for foragers, herbalists, nature lovers, perhaps for you if you feel like you have become disconnected from the natural world.
Over the weekend you will:
*Learn about the wild foods that are in season
*Learn about the medicinal properties of the wild plants around you and how to use them
*Learn how to turn acorns into nutritious flour
*Learn how to use your intuition and connect with plants and the natural world
*Learn simple exercises to awaken your senses
*Eat delicious wild and natural foods prepared by nutritionist Aisling Kirwan from Cooking Up Change
*Spend lots of time outdoors, tapping into the healing power of nature
*Talk and share and explore, listen to stories
Please note: Accommodation is shared in either double rooms or small dormitory style male and female accommodation. If you are booking with a partner/friend and would like to share please contact us before you make your booking, contact details below.
Rathdrum is connected to the bus and train service if you require public transport, the accommodation is 10-15 mins walk from each.
Schedule for the weekend:
Arrive between 4-5pm. Welcome tea/drink, time to settle in.
18.00 Introducing the facilitators and each other.
19.30 Story telling, setting the scene, if weather permits outdoors around the fire. The majority of the weekend will be spent outdoors in the oak forests and we will enjoy some of the beautful walks nearby.
10.00 Outdoors for foraging walk, gathering wild greens, nuts, fruits, berries, mushrooms for lunch and dinner. Collecting acorns for making flour in the afternoon.
The day will be interspersed with engaging exercises to activate and enliven the senses, helping people connect directly to the healing power of nature, which John describes as 'simple, palpable, and often life-changing for many.' Our preferred method of teaching is participant led. For this reason we like to keep the schedule a little open and free, as we come to know the needs of the group this guides us in choosing which areas to focus on eg. foraging, using our intuition, nature connection, herbal medicine, ancestral wisdom.
1-2 Free Time
Afternoon, preparing wild foods, processing acorns together into flour for our evening meal. Continuing our exploration of the morning's teaching.
18.30 Wild Dinner
9.30 A deeper look at herbal medicine, the healing power of plants, intuition, making your own medicine.
2-3 pm Reflections, discussion, sharing.
In the event of cancellation we will offer a full refund. Please note: Participant cancellations cannot be taken after July 31st, 2019.
Looking forward to it!
I see or hear
that more or less
that leaves me
like a needle
in the haystack
It was what I was born for–
to look, to listen,
to lose myself
inside this soft world
